He studied at the Makanissa Major Seminary and entered in the<a title=\"Congregation of the Mission\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Congregation_of_the_Mission\">Congregation of the Mission<\/a> He was ordained <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Catholic priest\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catholic_priest\">Catholic priest<\/a> on 4 July 1976, and he earned a degree in <a title=\"Sociology\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sociology\">sociology<\/a> at the <a title=\"Pontifical Gregorian University\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pontifical_Gregorian_University\">Pontifical Gregorian University<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-HS_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berhaneyesus_Demerew_Souraphiel#cite_note-HS-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 1990 Berhaneyesus Souraphiel became <a title=\"Provincial superior\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Provincial_superior\">Provincial superior<\/a> of the Lazarists in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Addis Abeba\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Addis_Abeba\">Addis Abeba<\/a>. In 1994 he was appointed as Prefect of the <a class=\"new\" title=\"Apostolic Vicariate of Jimma-Bonga (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Apostolic_Vicariate_of_Jimma-Bonga&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Apostolic Vicariate of Jimma-Bonga<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-HS_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berhaneyesus_Demerew_Souraphiel#cite_note-HS-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> On 7 November 1997 he was chosen as <a title=\"Auxiliary bishop\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Auxiliary_bishop\">auxiliary bishop<\/a> of Addis Abeba and was consecrated bishop on 25 January 1998 by Cardinal <a title=\"Paulos Tzadua\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paulos_Tzadua\">Paulos Tzadua<\/a>. On 7 July 1999 he succeeded to Cardinal Paulos Tzadua as Ethiopian Catholic Archbishop of Addis Abeba.<sup id=\"cite_ref-CH_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berhaneyesus_Demerew_Souraphiel#cite_note-CH-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>He is also the Chairman of the Association of Members Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA).
